Advanced selection program for Authentic Apis mellifera carnica
project: “The Guardians”
The project “The Guardians” focuses on the preservation and selection of the local population of the Carniolan bee, Apis m. carnica. This initiative aims to ensure a healthy, calm, and productive population of Carniolan bees through a structured breeding program.
Key aspects of the project include:
– Breeding Location: The breeding takes place in the Plemenilno okrožje Bohor, specifically at the Podskalica location within the Kozjansko biosphere reserve.
– Controlled Drone Population: A diverse, selected, and controlled drone population is maintained to enhance genetic integrity and vitality.
– Virgin Queen Production: Virgin queen bees are produced from first-class, tested, and hygienic breeder queens that exhibit Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH) traits.
– Geographic Isolation: The breeding program is conducted within a controlled radius to minimize genetic mixing with non-local populations, preserving the purity of Carniolan bee lines.
This project not only aims to sustain the unique characteristics of the Carniolan bee but also contributes to broader efforts in beekeeping by promoting genetic diversity and resilience against diseases.
